Martha is an invaluable resource to several of our cooperative districts. After retiring from Duluth Public Schools, she agreed to support the Carlton district by assisting with due process and mentoring new teachers. She quickly became an integral and trusted member of the team, and staff consistently looked to her for leadership, perspective, and guidance.
Martha brought a steady, thoughtful presence to her work, helping teams navigate complex questions and ensuring practices remained compliant with special education requirements. She built strong, respectful relationships with students, families, and community members and earned the trust of all those she worked with.
The impact of her contributions was evident early on, and soon additional districts sought to contract with her for services. She now supports both Carlton and McGregor, where her expertise, reliability, and deep institutional knowledge are essential. Quite simply, these programs would not be as strong or successful without Martha’s continued commitment and dedication.
This is Martha's third year consulting for Carlton, and second year consulting for McGregor. Martha retired from Duluth School District in 2023 after being there 17 years. Previous to Duluth, she coordinated the psychoeducational services for IDT students in Superior, WI for over 8 years. Her teaching began in Minneapolis in General Education/Montessori and then settled in Heart of the Earth Survival School until she moved in 1994.
Martha's favorite part of working in special education is collaborating with fantastic teams of professionals who truly care about children. She finds it incredibly rewarding to see the "light bulb" go on when a student finally understands a difficult concept. Additionally, Martha values the ability to develop graduation plans that empower students to find success and navigate the world after high school.
Martha worked and saved for years to finally move into her dream lake house last summer. Now, she loves hosting her children and grandchildren, providing them with a place to build lasting memories and truly enjoy life together.
Congratulations Martha!
