Melissa Johson, Principal at Willow River Schools, was nominated because she is an outstanding administrator who has a profound and positive impact on our school, especially in the area of special education. She consistently goes above and beyond to support students, families, and staff, ensuring that every student’s needs are met with care and intention. Her strong leadership skills are evident in the way she fosters collaboration, problem-solves effectively, and creates an inclusive school environment where all learners can succeed.

Melissa is a dedicated advocate for students with special needs, always working to ensure they have access to the supports and opportunities necessary to thrive. She takes the time to listen, builds meaningful relationships, and approaches challenges with both compassion and determination. Her commitment to students and staff truly sets her apart and makes a lasting difference in our school community.

Melissa has been part of Willow River Area School since 2013. She began her career as a teacher and has served in administration for the past six years. Prior to joining Willow River, she taught in North Branch, Hinckley-Finlayson, and at Pine Technical and Community College. She also spent six years owning and operating a quilt shop.

One of the most meaningful parts of working at Willow River for Melissa is that it is her hometown. She said, "It is truly special to serve the same community where I grew up." That connection has helped her build strong relationships with students, families, and community members. She also deeply values the small-school environment and the dedicated, close-knit staff who make Willow River such a special place.

In Melissa's free time, she loves to camp at their lake lot in Wright, read, sew/quilt, and spend time with her family and friends.

Congratulations Melissa!
